I May Live In The USA But Story Began In Netherland T-Shirt Caran d'Ache Luminance 6901 Clr Pncl Set 76 Artist Rng Max 55% OFF Without any reservations I love Caran d’Ache Luminance pencils; in fact, I recently ordered my third 76 Pencil set. As they get shorter from sharpening, I find it more economical to buy a new tin rather than individual pencils as open stock. I am not a professional artist, but I take my coloring hobby very seriously, and I treat my coloring supplies with greatest care. I have most of the major brands of coloring pencils, including Prisma colors, Faber Castell Polychromos, Staedtler Ergosoft pencils, Caran d’Ache Pablos, etc., but Luminance remains my favorite, and I handle the pens like precious jewelry. I take equally well care of the tins and containers. When I received the latest set of Luminance, the pencils were as beautiful as as always, but I was heartbroken to see that they arrived in a damaged tin, or rather box (they are cardboard, not metal). This almost totally ruined my joy in the pencils altogether. It was something that did not happen during shipping, and I feel that a highly reputable company like Caran d’Ache should not something like this leave the premises. Some people may think, “So what, put tht pencils in another container,“ but that would not be a solution in this case. The three individual trays holding the pencils are very carefully constructed, the cradle each single pencil so that it will not move or fall out, even if the tray is held upside down. It would be hard, if not impossible, to fit these trays into another box. Besides, at the price Of the set, this should not be necessary.I've been wanting a set of these for a couple of years, but could never justify the cost. I'm not an artist, just a colorist. Already have prisma, polychormos, and pablos, so why should I fork that amount of money for a set of pencils? If you are like me, you already have tried every other cheap and semi expensive pencil for kicks, found some you like, but are always wanting to add more. Then you've seen the videos and art work with these and just well, have to try them at some point.Well, here is my honest review for what it's worth.Pros. The colors lay down beautifully, they are softer than polychoromos, harder that prisma, they are butter smooth. They will take layer after layer after layer, dark to light, light to dark, they don't mind a bit. If layering isn't for you they burnish well with just a single layer. They blend great with all my other pencils, even with polychormos being oil. They preform like polychromos at holding a point for a longer time than prisma. Not one problem in sharping. Shipping and packing was great.Cons. The biggest one was my first though, and it's the cost. Even open stock the cheapest I've found is going to cost me almost 5 bucks to replace one pencil. It's going to make using them a lot stay in the back of my mind every time I pick one up. Even though they hold a point for longer than prisma, I found that I'm so scared to put a longer point on them for fear of breaking them, I just don't do it. So in essence I find my self always sharping. My other small complaint it the colors palette. For me, at least there are to many muted colors, and not near enough blues, greens, browns and yellows.Final thoughts.Would I purchase this set again? NO, but I'm glad I have them. Now if they came out with a larger set for the same price, with more bright colors, heck yes I'd really save up and get them. I just know there are more colors in this set I'll never use. So for me at least that was a waste.I am a colored pencil junkie lol!!! I am fairly new to them and only started using them in my portraits about 2 to 3 years ago. When I first started with them I was terrible I had to teach myself to use them so if your struggling with this be patient don't give up and practice practice practice!!! I have several brands Prismacolors ,faber-castell and these I love them all but with that said they preform differently. These are pricey so I wouldn't recommend them to start out with unless you are experienced and can afford them. They perform smoothly and with a light touch you can add and blend many many layers without destroying your paper or having the wax bloom effect unlike with prismacolors The colors are richer and brighter a must have for any color pencil artist or enthusiast. This Blue Carb I created with these pencils. I hope this is helpful :)On the pricey side, I absolutely Love these colored pencils.....Very creamy with amazing blending. Im not a professional, but i will not go back to anything else. I do plan to purchase Faber Castell polycromos to use with the Luminance pencils. Both are spectacular, and the quality is amazing!!! :)I got these because their color palette is so different from Prismacolor's 150 set (which are also FANTASTIC pencils!). I wasn't sure how well the Luminance pencils would work with Prismacolors. Turns out it was a marriage made in heaven! They blend together beautifully!! And the quality of how the Carand'Ache pencils are made are far superior to Prismacolors. Don't get me wrong... Prismacolors are rich beautiful pigments, but whoever manufactures them doesn't take the time to use quality wood or quality control to make sure the pencils get to us in great shape. Carand'Ache on the other hand uses quality wood with their rich beautiful pigments. Carand'Ache takes the time to make sure they are made well and ships them in boxes with plenty of padding to keep them safe. Definitely worth the high price tag! My only minor complaint is that I wish there was a bigger set of Luminance pencils available. I love Luminances... they are creamy, rich pigments that are smooth and easy to blend with!
